Wernhout is a quiet village with many tree nurseries and where beautiful cycling and walking tours pass through it. East of Wernhout are the nature reserves the “Krochten” and “Lange Gooren”. This beautiful and varied landscape with its low shrubs, water and fields of heather, stretches here and there over the Belgium border.
As well as Zundert, Wernhout lies along the former main road between Breda and Antwerp. The ribbon development of the villages show that people wanted to live along the road as close as they could, to earn money with trade and accommodation, from passing traffic. In 1812 Napoleon Bonaparte paved and straightened the roads from steeple to steeple. It is clearly seen on this road from Antwerp to Breda.
